Width is the first thing people notice about a Cuban link chain. It changes the look more than length, metal or finish. A 4mm chain whispers; a 14mm chain announces itself from across the room. Choosing the right width is mostly about the look you want, but your build, your wardrobe and your budget all play a part.

Cuban Link Chain Width Guide: From 3mm to 20mm

Here is what each width range looks like in practice, and who it tends to suit.

How width is measured

Cuban link width is measured across a single link, from one side to the other, in millimeters. It does not include the clasp, which is often slightly wider. Thickness, or how tall the link stands off the skin, usually increases with width, which is why wider chains feel so much heavier.

2mm to 3mm: delicate

At this size a Cuban link looks fine and refined. It is popular for women, for layering, and for people who want a chain they can wear constantly without it drawing attention. It can carry a small pendant, and it sits comfortably under a shirt collar.

Best for: minimalists, layering stacks, small pendants, first chains for people who rarely wear jewelry.

Watch out for: very thin hollow chains, which can kink and break easily. In this range, solid construction matters.

4mm to 5mm: subtle everyday

This range is noticeable but understated. It is one of the most versatile widths for daily wear, and it suits almost anyone. A 4mm or 5mm Cuban looks great on its own and works well as the base chain in a layered look.

Best for: everyday wear, office settings, smaller builds, women who want a classic Cuban look, men who prefer subtle jewelry.

6mm to 7mm: the classic

If there is a “standard” Cuban link width, it lives here. A 6 or 7mm chain is clearly visible, has a satisfying weight in solid gold, and still works with everyday clothes. It is a common first chain for men and a popular statement width for women.

Best for: daily wear with presence, first serious gold chains, wearing alone without a pendant.

8mm to 9mm: confident

At 8 or 9mm, the chain starts to become a feature of the outfit rather than an accent. It looks bold with a plain T-shirt or an open collar, and it pairs well with a matching bracelet. Solid gold chains in this range are heavy and noticeably more expensive.

Best for: medium to larger builds, people who want a chain to be noticed, matching chain-and-bracelet sets.

10mm to 12mm: statement

This is classic statement territory. A 10 to 12mm Cuban link has strong presence and is closely associated with hip-hop and Miami style. In solid gold, these chains are heavy and represent a significant purchase. Many buyers choose hollow or semi-solid construction at this width to control weight and cost, accepting that the chain needs more care.

Best for: larger builds, special occasions, people who already wear bold jewelry.

Watch out for: comfort over a long day, and the fragility of hollow chains at this width.

13mm to 16mm: bold

Very wide Cuban links are unmistakable. They are often worn alone as the centerpiece of an outfit. In solid gold they are very heavy and very expensive, so many are made hollow, in silver with gold plating, or in stainless steel. Iced-out versions set with stones are common at this width.

Best for: stage, events, photos and people who want maximum presence.

18mm to 20mm and beyond: extreme

At the top end, Cuban links are more sculpture than accessory. These are usually custom pieces, heavy iced chains, or plated and steel versions for the look without the cost. They are rarely practical for daily wear but undeniably striking.

How width affects weight

Weight climbs much faster than width. As a chain gets wider, each link also gets taller and thicker, so a solid chain at twice the width can weigh three to four times as much. That has two consequences: comfort and price. Before choosing a wide solid chain, ask for the weight and consider whether you will be comfortable wearing it all day.

How width affects length

Wide links take up more space around the neck, so the same nominal length sits higher on a wide chain than a narrow one. If you are going above about 10mm, consider adding an inch or two to get the same drop.

Matching width to your build

  • Slim neck and narrow shoulders: 3 to 7mm usually looks balanced.
  • Average build: 5 to 9mm covers most styles.
  • Broad neck and shoulders: 8 to 14mm can look proportionate rather than oversized.

These are not rules, just a starting point. Personal style matters more than build. A bold 12mm chain on a slim frame can look intentional and striking if that is the look you want.

Width for layering

If you plan to layer chains, vary the widths so each one is distinct. A common combination is a 3 to 4mm chain with a 6 to 8mm chain, two inches apart in length. Layering two chains of the same width can look cluttered.

Width for bracelets

A matching Cuban bracelet is usually the same width as the chain or one step narrower. Very wide bracelets can feel bulky under a sleeve, so many people choose 6 to 10mm for daily wear.

Width and comfort

Narrow chains up to about 6mm are easy to forget you are wearing. From 8mm upward, most people notice the weight, especially in solid gold, and very wide chains can press on the back of the neck after a long day. If you want a wide look for daily wear, consider whether a semi-solid build, a slightly shorter length or a lighter metal makes sense, and give yourself a few days to get used to it.

Width and clasp choice

As width increases, the clasp needs to grow with it. Chains up to about 5mm often use a lobster claw; from 6mm upward a box clasp with at least one safety latch is the norm, and above 10mm double latches are strongly recommended. A clasp that looks small next to the chain is also a clue that the piece may not have been designed carefully.

Still unsure?

Print a width chart at actual size, or cut strips of paper to different widths and hold them against your neck in the mirror. Better still, try an inexpensive stainless steel version for a week. If you find yourself wanting more presence, go wider. If you keep forgetting it is there in a good way, you have found your width.
