Length decides where a Cuban link chain sits on your body, and that changes the whole look. A chain that rests on the collarbone reads clean and modern. One that falls to the middle of the chest feels relaxed and bold. One that sits tight around the neck can look like a choker, intentionally or not. Getting the length right matters as much as choosing the width.

Cuban Link Chain Length Guide: Where Each Length Sits

This guide explains what each common length looks like on an average adult, and how to adjust for your own build, the chain’s width and the way you want to wear it.

A quick note on how length is measured

Chain length is measured end to end with the chain laid flat, including the clasp. Most sellers list lengths in inches, typically in two-inch steps from 16 to 30 inches. When you wear the chain, it forms a loop around your neck, so the drop below the base of your neck depends on both the chain length and your neck size.

The descriptions below assume an average adult neck of roughly 14 to 16 inches for women and 15 to 17 inches for men. If your neck is larger or smaller, the chain will sit a little higher or lower.

16 inches

On most women, a 16-inch chain sits at the base of the neck, just above the collarbone. On most men, it is too short and sits tight around the neck like a choker.

Good for: women who want a close-fitting chain that shows above a neckline, layering as the shortest chain in a stack.

Not ideal for: men, wide chains, or anyone who prefers jewelry that does not touch the neck.

18 inches

The most popular women’s length. On women, an 18-inch chain sits right on the collarbone, which is a flattering spot with most necklines. On men with slim necks, it sits high at the base of the neck; on men with larger necks, it can feel tight.

Good for: everyday women’s chains, pendants, a close-fitting men’s look on a slim neck.

20 inches

The classic men’s starting length and a slightly longer women’s option. On men, a 20-inch chain sits around or just below the collarbone and shows nicely with a crew neck T-shirt. On women, it falls below the collarbone toward the top of the chest.

Good for: a first men’s chain, everyday wear, open-collar shirts, women who want a slightly lower drop.

22 inches

A popular men’s length that sits a few inches below the collarbone on the upper chest. It is visible with open collars and sits outside most T-shirts. On women, 22 inches falls lower on the chest and suits layering or pendants.

Good for: men who want a relaxed look, wider chains that need a little more length, pendant chains.

24 inches

On most men, a 24-inch chain sits mid-chest. It is a common length for statement chains and pendants, and it gives a relaxed, confident look. On women, it falls well below the bust line and is mostly used for long layered looks.

Good for: bold chains, larger builds, pendant chains, the longest chain in a men’s layered stack.

26 to 30 inches

These longer lengths sit low on the chest, often near the sternum or below. They are mainly worn with pendants, as part of layered stacks, or as a deliberately oversized statement. On a slim frame, a 30-inch chain can look very long; on a larger frame, it may sit closer to where a 24-inch chain sits on an average build.

Good for: large pendants, oversized looks, tall or broad builds.

Length and chain width

Wide links take up more room around the neck, which shortens the effective length. A 10mm chain at 20 inches can sit noticeably higher than a 4mm chain at the same length. As a rule of thumb:

  • Up to about 7mm: buy the length you measured.
  • 8 to 12mm: add about an inch.
  • 13mm and up: add one to two inches.

Very wide chains are also stiffer, so they do not drape into a V shape the way thin chains do. They tend to sit as a rounder loop, which changes how they look on the chest.

Length and body type

Neck size, shoulder width and height all affect where a chain falls. A person with a broad neck and shoulders may find that a 22-inch chain sits where a 20-inch chain sits on someone slimmer. Tall people often prefer slightly longer chains for proportion, while shorter people may find long chains overwhelm their frame. These differences are why measuring yourself is more reliable than going by a chart alone.

Length and clothing

Think about what you wear most often:

  • Crew neck T-shirts: 20 to 22 inches for men and 18 inches for women usually sit just above or at the neckline.
  • Open-collar and button-up shirts: 20 to 24 inches shows nicely in the opening.
  • Hoodies and sweaters: longer lengths of 24 inches or more sit outside the top.
  • V-necks and scoop necks: shorter chains frame the neckline; longer chains follow the V.
  • Collared dress shirts with a tie: a shorter chain that sits under the collar keeps the look discreet.

Length for pendants

A pendant adds weight and draws the eye downward. Most people choose a chain two inches longer than they would wear without a pendant, so the pendant sits on the chest rather than at the throat. Large pendants usually look best on 24 to 30-inch chains.

Length for layering

When layering two or three chains, space them about two inches apart. A common men’s stack is 20 and 22 inches, or 20, 22 and 24 inches. A common women’s stack is 16, 18 and 20 inches. Vary the widths too, so each chain is distinct.

How to find your ideal length at home

  1. Take a piece of string, a shoelace or a phone cable.
  2. Wrap it around your neck and let it fall to where you want the chain to sit.
  3. Pinch it where the ends meet, then lay it flat and measure.
  4. Round to the nearest standard length, adding an inch for wide chains.

Our separate guide on measuring your neck goes through this in more detail, including how to measure a chain you already own.

When in doubt

If you are torn between two lengths, the longer one is usually the safer choice. A chain can be shortened by a jeweler, but it cannot easily be lengthened without adding links, which may not match perfectly. Many sellers also offer free resizing within a set period, so check that before you buy.
